Lesson Overview

This class will have a deep focus on the basic elements of storytelling through visual literacy. By using drawings, the students are allowed to express themselves through a medium that they are familiar with: comic books. Through this expressive nature, the students will be able to learn the core elements of literature while improving their literacy, reading, and writing skills.

Cari Smelan

B.A. in History and Art Education; Certified K-12 Teacher

Ms. Cari Smelan is an art teacher from Chicago Illinois. Cari has been teaching art for literacy and communication to children and adults of all ages for 15 years. Cari's teaching philosophy is to let the student make choices and use narrative in their work which explores the themes of social responsibility. She believe that art is a language and can aid children in expressing themselves creatively and effectively.
